Tabular Method (Integration By Parts) - Calculus 2

Sep 20, 2022

When solving integrals that require integration by parts, you may encounter some integrals that require the use of the integration by parts process multiple times in order to be completely solved. This can quickly become a tedious process that is fairly time consuming, not to mention that there are plenty of opportunities for you to make a mistake along the way. In these situations, it is going to be helpful to know an alternative way to perform integration by parts that is arguably quicker and easier than the traditional method of using the formula.

This alternative method is known as the Tabular Method (also called the DI method of Hindu method). As its name implies, the Tabular Method involves the use of a table that will allow us to more easily solve integrals that require the use of integration by parts multiple times. However, the Tabular Method is not limited to being used for such integrals, it can also be used for simpler integrals that can be solved by only using integration by parts one time.

Knowing how to create the table for the Tabular Method and use its contents to find the solution to these different types of integrals is the main focus of this lesson in Calculus 2, so let's get right to it!

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • What the Tabular Method for integration by parts is and why it is useful
  • How to use the Tabular Method by creating a table to solve integrals quickly
  • How to know when to stop writing out rows and columns for your table and use its contents to solve different types of integrals

I hope you find this video to be helpful!
